What she says: I'm fine

What she says: I'm fine
What she means: In the year of our Lord 1314, patriots of Scotland, starving and outnumbered, charged the fields of Bannockburn. They fought like warrior poets. They fought like Scotsmen. And won their freedom.

"There is something to be learned from a rainstorm. When meeting with a sudden shower, you try not to get wet and run quickly along the road. But doing such things as passing under the eaves of houses, you still get wet. When you are resolved from the beginning, you will not be perplexed, though you will still get the same soaking. This understanding extends to everything."

the-wicked-knight:

Barding is horse armour.

Barding was often used in conjunction with cloth covers known as caparisons. These coverings sometimes covered the entire horse from nose to tail and extended to the ground. It is unclear from period illustrations how much metal defensive covering was used in conjunction. Textile covers may also be called barding. Here's a great resource on the subject:

The art of war

This is a great specimen of a great genre of books popular in the later Middle Ages. You are looking at images from the Erlangen "Kriegsbuch" (Book of War), which presents texts and images devoted to the art of war. The contents varies greatly, as visible in these images. The book shows how to properly handle a sword (pics 1-2) and how to construct weapons (pics 3, 4, 9). It also depicts what certain weapons looked like. The cannon in pic 5, for example, must have been new to many soldiers. How handy to know to keep your distance from this device! Other images show in detail how to defend clusters of people: pic 7 demonstrates how you can use a circle of wagons for a make-shift castle, while pics 6 and 8 provide the outlines of effective city defences. Combined with the accompanying (meticulous) descriptions, the images provided the late-medieval soldier with the information he needed to do his job - and they did so in an artistic manner.
